Nisi 100mm Premium Filter Kit Review

March 29, 2016
Firstly I’d just like to thank the great team at http://photogear.nz who are the official stockists of NiSi Filters here in New Zealand for supplying me with the system for review. Please do check out their site for some fantastic deals.

I’ve been curious to check out the hype of the new NiSi V5 filter system for some time. Living in Aoraki Mount Cook, light levels can often be at a premium in the mountains and its essential to be able to move fast to capture that moment. I’ve often found circular threaded filters to be time consuming and ultimately frustrating in this regard. While digital blending has become more prevalent in recent years, filters will always be an essential tool for controlling shutter speeds.

Photogear NZ provided me with the NiSi V5 filter 100mm system along with a 150mmx100m 0.9 soft grad filter and a 100mmx100mm 10 stop filter. The system comes in an aesthetically pleasing three compartment leather case along with separate leather cases for the individual filters. The square filter system is easily put together and has 3 common adapter ring threads - 67-82mm, 72-82mm and 77mm-82mm. This is particularly useful if you have multiple lenses of different thread size. The system comes with an 82mm ultra slim circular polariser (CPL) which can be left in the main adapter ring for ease of use. The square filter holder is mounted to the main adapter ring by pulling a trigger to set the holder in place. By releasing the trigger it then locks the filter holder in place.

The V5 filter holder comes with accurately sized filter guide rails that allows 3 filters to be stacked in the system in addition to the CPL. One major issue with stacking circular threaded filters is the extreme vignetting that occurs. A major attribute of the NiSi system is that no vignetting occurs when stacking 3 filters along the CPL. Serrated scroll wheels mounted into the main adapter ring allow easy rotation of the CPL even when filters are placed in front of it. I’ve experienced no light leakage from the system which is particularly important when using the 10 stop filter. As outlined earlier the speed in which filters can be placed and removed is an important issue for me and once the filter system is mounted it really couldn’t be much easier.
The guide rails allow good tension to give you confidence that the filters will not slide but allow easy manipulation for adjustment. The huge 150mmx100m 0.9 soft grad can easily be adjusted to get the gradient just right for the scene. This is another positive over circular grad filters which are largely hard to adjust without having to change your photographic composition. The NiSi filter glass is treated with exclusive Nano dual side coating technology which helps cut the intensity of visible light without affecting the contrast of the scene. After using the glass filters on 3 occasions I have not seen any noticeable colour casts which are found in nearly all filter brands that I have used.

In conclusion, it is not hard to see why the NiSi brand are starting to take the filter market by storm and becoming the system of choice for a lot of professionals. The system is simple, easy to use and most importantly delivers fantastic results.
